Specifically, the article examines innovative processes for the sustainable treatment and recovery of sewage sludge, while placing particular emphasis on the regional recycling of phosphorus.

First and foremost, the technical article centers on energy recovery from sewage sludge in decentralized facilities. Because such facilities enable regional treatment, they successfully reduce transportation distances and allow for the efficient use of available resources. Consequently, thermal sewage sludge recovery offers several distinct advantages. On the one hand, operators can use the organic content to generate energy. On the other hand, thermal treatment produces sewage sludge ash that contains valuable nutrients. Therefore, thermal recovery opens up promising new possibilities for a sustainable circular economy.

Marc Lincke of Fraunhofer IKTS Dresden (biomass conversion and nutrient recycling) and Erich Eder of Carbotechnik Energiesysteme GmbH co-authored this technical paper. Together, the authors present practical approaches for sustainable thermal sewage sludge treatment. In doing so, they successfully combine thermal processes with innovative concepts for phosphorus recycling, ash modification, and nutrient recovery.

In this way, the approach unites energy generation, resource conservation, and regional recycling, thereby creating a solid foundation for a sustainable sewage sludge management system.
