Calciner for Kaolin: Dorfner relies on Carbotechnik

Dorfner is a German company specializing in the processing of kaolin and crystalline quartz sand. The company extracts these raw materials from its own open-pit mines and processes them into high-quality industrial minerals. For its newly built flash calcination plant, Dorfner chose a calciner for kaolin from Carbotechnik.

The new flash calcination plant processes kaolin into valuable fillers for the paint, plastics and specialty paper industries. Carbotechnik developed a specially designed calciner for kaolin for this application.

The process feeds the kaolin axially into the specially designed funnel-shaped combustion chamber. At the same time, hot gas enters the chamber at around 1,400 °C. The hot gas mixes rapidly with the incoming material and heats the kaolin within a very short time.

During this rapid heating process, the kaolin releases its bound crystal water. This process creates amorphous or porous particles. A component that determines the required degree of whiteness is then sintered onto these particles. As a result, the calciner for kaolin supports the controlled production of high-quality fillers.

Precise raw material dosing

Dorfner also relies on Carbotechnik’s proven dosing system. The dosing machine continuously and evenly feeds the raw material into the combustion chamber. At the same time, it provides highly accurate dosing.

This precise material feed creates an important basis for a stable calcination process. In addition, consistent dosing supports uniform process conditions and helps Dorfner achieve its high quality standards.

Complete E&I engineering from Carbotechnik

Carbotechnik supplied not only the calciner for kaolin and the dosing machine. Dorfner also commissioned Carbotechnik to engineer the complete electrical and instrumentation control system.

As part of the project, Carbotechnik provided the complete electrical installation, control cabinets and process control system with visualization. This integrated solution allows the operator to control and monitor the entire plant efficiently.

In addition, Carbotechnik equipped the plant with secure remote access via a VPN connection. Authorized personnel can therefore monitor the system remotely and provide fast support when required.

Successful cooperation with dorfner

Carbotechnik completed the project on schedule and worked closely with the Dorfner team throughout the implementation. This successful cooperation quickly led to another order from Dorfner.

The project therefore demonstrates the benefits of combining a reliable calciner for kaolin, precise dosing technology and complete E&I engineering. Carbotechnik provides these technologies as an integrated solution for demanding industrial mineral processing applications.
