Lignite Dust CHP Plant for RadiciGroup in Zeitz

A lignite dust CHP plant provides an efficient energy supply for industrial production processes. RadiciGroup is one of Italy’s internationally active chemical companies. Its diversified business units focus on chemicals, plastics and synthetic fibres.

Radici Chimica Deutschland in Zeitz

The wholly owned subsidiary Radici Chimica Deutschland GmbH operates a production site in the Zeitz Industrial Park. The company produces adipic acid, an important raw material for nylon and other plastics.

These plastics are used, for example, in the automotive and clothing industries. Therefore, the production site requires a reliable supply of both steam and electricity.

CHP Plant Using Lignite Dust and Nitrous Oxide

GETEC built a combined heat and power (CHP) plant to supply energy to the production site. The plant generates the required steam and also covers part of the site’s electricity demand.

In addition to lignite dust, the firing system uses nitrous oxide (N₂O) generated locally at the production site as a fuel. As a result, the plant can make energetic use of the nitrous oxide produced during the process.

At the same time, the CHP concept enables efficient use of the available fuels. Consequently, the system combines steam generation and electricity generation in one integrated energy concept.

Double Fire-Tube Boiler for Saturated Steam Generation

GETEC commissioned Carbotechnik with the engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of the firing and dosing technology.

In addition, Carbotechnik carried out the required process engineering for the double fire-tube boiler. The boiler features two separate firing systems:

  • one firing system for lignite dust
  • one firing system for nitrous oxide (N₂O)
  • BKS dosing for lignite dust firing
  • saturated steam generation
  • firing and dosing technology
  • installation and commissioning

The separate firing systems allow the plant to use the different fuels in a controlled manner. At the same time, the coordinated dosing technology ensures a reliable fuel supply.

BKS Dosing for Industrial Energy Supply

BKS dosing is an important part of the firing technology. Carbotechnik designed the dosing system to match the properties of the lignite dust and the requirements of the firing system.

The silo, dosing and firing technology work together as an integrated system. Therefore, the dosing equipment supplies the fuel to the firing system in a controlled and continuous manner.

Furthermore, Carbotechnik integrated the required components into the overall plant concept. This creates a reliable technical solution for industrial steam generation.

Energy Supply for the Chemical Industry

The Radici Chimica Deutschland project demonstrates the potential of a CHP plant for the chemical industry. The system supplies the production process with steam while also covering part of the site’s electricity demand.

Furthermore, the energy concept uses two different fuels. In addition to lignite dust, the system makes use of nitrous oxide generated locally at the site.

Carbotechnik supported the project with comprehensive process engineering, firing technology and dosing technology. From engineering and supply to installation and commissioning, the company handled key tasks in the implementation of the plant.
