Saturated steam for a paper mill in Düren
A Quick Overview of the Project
Carbotechnik lignite firing systems for steam boilers at Schoellershammer paper mill
The Schoellershammer paper mill is located in Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, directly on the Rur River. The mill produces a wide range of paper products, including paper for corrugated cardboard.
As demand for packaging materials continued to grow, Schoellershammer expanded its production capacity by installing a second paper machine. This expansion also increased the demand for process steam. Since the existing steam supply could no longer meet the additional requirements, GETEC GmbH was commissioned to establish a new steam generation system.
Lignite firing systems for new steam boilers
The new steam generation system includes two gas-fired boilers and two fire-tube boilers equipped with lignite firing systems. Each lignite boiler features a proven Carbotechnik burner system designed for reliable combustion and continuous operation.
The burners receive their fuel from individual Carbotechnik dosing units, each with a feed capacity of 1,570 kg/h. Flange-mounted hopper filters protect the dosing units and support reliable fuel handling.
Two separate fuel silos, installed above the dosing units, supply the fuel. A cross-conveyor screw connects the two silos and ensures a continuous fuel supply to both dosing units. This configuration provides reliable fuel conveying and consistent operation of the lignite firing systems.
Engineering, instrumentation, and control
In addition to the overall system design, Carbotechnik supplied and installed the instrumentation and control systems for the main components. The scope also included the two air supply fans for the steam boilers, all required piping, and the ignition gas trains.
Carbotechnik also developed the control concept for the steam boilers, economizers, burners, and complete fuel supply system. This integrated approach ensures reliable coordination between the combustion, fuel dosing, and steam generation systems.
Commissioning and safety testing
During commissioning, Carbotechnik tested all safety shutdown functions and supported the official individual burner inspection. These tests ensured that the burner systems and associated safety functions met the required operational and safety standards.
Carbotechnik scope of supply and services
The project scope essentially comprised:
- overall engineering for the steam boilers, economizers, burners, and fuel supply system
- control concept for the complete system
- Carbotechnik muffle burners for BKS firing systems
- combustion and blast air supply, including blowers
- instrumentation and control valves
- lignite fuel dosing and conveying systems
- 2 x DN1300 dosing units with top-mounted filters
- electrical, instrumentation, and control systems
- piping and ignition gas trains
- commissioning, safety testing, and support during the official burner inspection
The project combines reliable lignite coombustion technology, precise fuel dosing, and integrated control systems to provide a dependable steam supply for the expanded paper production facility at Schoellershammer.
