Dorfner, a German company specializing in the processing of kaolin and crystalline quartz sand, recently installed a modern flash calcination system in close collaboration with Carbotechnik. First of all, Dorfner extracts these raw materials from the company’s own open-pit deposits. Consequently, they transform them into high-quality industrial minerals through sophisticated, state-of-the-art processes.

Benefits of the new flash calcination system

Inside the newly constructed plant, Dorfner now processes raw kaolin into valuable fillers for the paint, plastics, and specialty paper industries. For this purpose, the production line utilizes an advanced calciner that Carbotechnik specially developed. Specifically, the integrated flash calcination system axially blows the kaolin into the custom, funnel-shaped combustion chamber. Immediately, the incoming hot gas, which reaches approximately 1,400°C, mixes with the material and heats it instantaneously. As a result, this intense heat quickly releases the trapped crystalline water. Simultaneously, a component with a specific whiteness sinters onto the resulting amorphous or porous particles.

Furthermore, Dorfner relies heavily on Carbotechnik’s proven dosing technology to run the flash calcination system at peak capacity. Indeed, the specialized dosing machine ensures a continuous, uniform, and highly precise feed of the raw material into the combustion chamber. Therefore, this precise control remains a key factor in meeting Dorfner’s strict high-quality standards.

In addition to supplying the core calciner and the dosing machine, Carbotechnik also handled the entire engineering for the electrical and instrumentation system. Moreover, Carbotechnik provided the complete installation, the modern control panels, and the advanced process control system with live visualization. Finally, engineers equipped the entire plant with secure remote access via a stable VPN connection.

Ultimately, the on-time completion and the excellent collaboration with Dorfner generated outstanding results. Because of this success, Carbotechnik has already received another follow-up order from the satisfied company.
