GETEC Inaugurates highly efficient CHP plant at SCHOELLERSHAMMER paper mill
On October 11, 2017, GETEC heat & power GmbH and SCHOELLERSHAMMER GmbH & Co. KG officially inaugurated a modern, highly efficient combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Düren. Today, the new plant reliably supplies the long-established paper mill with both steam and electricity.
Initially, the energy service provider GETEC planned, financed, and constructed this innovative energy supply system. Consequently, GETEC now also handles its daily operation and delivers ongoing energy services. During the celebration, about 80 guests attended the inauguration. Among them was Düren’s mayor, Paul Larue, who explicitly emphasized how vital a sustainable energy supply is for the local community.
Future-proof energy supply through CHP technology
Indeed, the new CHP plant serves as a prime example of smart, sustainable industrial energy supply. The system utilizes a multi-module design featuring two steam boilers and a steam turbine. Together, these components generate approximately 200 GWh of energy per year.
As a result, the plant does not just provide the crucial process steam required for paper production. Additionally, it simultaneously generates electricity through combined heat and power—yielding an electrical output of 1.022 MW and a steam output of up to 77 t/h.
Furthermore, the system includes a particularly innovative feature: engineers designed one of the steam boilers to directly burn the biogas generated on-site at the paper mill. Therefore, this setup marks a major step forward in reducing CO₂ emissions.
