Carbotechnik visiting Hambach open pit mine

Our technology is specialized in handling of dusty fuels. Our systems are often built, where brown coal dust from Rheinbraun fuels is used. For this reason, the Carbotechnik was invited to visit the Hambach open pit mine. The visit took place on 5th of July 2019.

The open pit mine has been active since 1978 and the annual coal production is about 40 million t.
4,600 employees work on 4,380 hectares of the mine area.
The open pit mine is equipped with 7 rotary excavators, which are among the largest working machines in the world due to their length (up to 240m), height (100m) and weight (up to 13,500 t).
The brown coal from the Hambach open-pit mine covers about 15 percent of North Rhine-Westphalia's electricity needs.

Not only open-pit mining makes a big impression, but also the environmental protection measures that RWE has been carrying out for years to recreate a balance in nature. Thus renaturation and recultivation is part of the corporate strategy. The renaturation and recultivation plan creates the new landscape lakes, increased green areas, fields, meadows and forests, as well as new habitats for various animal and plant species.

Afterwards a coal refining factory "Fortuna Nord" in Bergheim-Niederaussem was visited.

For anyone, even coal- sceptic, such a visit is recommended.
